Born in Queens, New York, to two hard-working parents who emigrated from Jamaica, I am the third eldest of six children. Growing up, my parents worked hard to provide for my three younger siblings and me. My father worked with an upholstery firm in Manhattan. My mother worked nights at the Post Office before working at a small care facility for people with significant neurological deficiencies.
Following my parents' separation, I moved with my mother and siblings to Kissimmee, FL. At the age of 14 I was caring for my siblings so my mother could work nights at a juvenile detention center.
At age 16, I started my first job at Walt Disney World to financially help out my family. I graduated from New Dimensions High School in 2008. After that, I began my studies at Florida Southern College. I also joined Theta Chi Fraternity. In 4 years I graduated from Florida Southern College with two bachelor degrees and saddled with predatory student loan debt. When I was in school I struggled with my sexuality. Coming from a Jamaican family and family with old-school values and ideologies, being gay was seldom accepted. It wasn't until my junior year of college when I finally could accept myself and be proud of who I was, no longer caring what anyone thought, including my own family.
After college, like so many others, I worked two jobs to make ends meet and attempt to start paying off my student loans. In 2016, my political awakening occurred while attending a Bernie Sanders rally with my family. This led me to pay closer attention to our government; how it works and how they make their decisions. In 2020, I decided to become more politically involved; I started donating to the Bernie Sanders campaign, canvassed for his campaign, and got involved with other like-minded individuals. Today I'm spreading my message of a caring country and better tomorrow.
Over the last year, we’ve all been woken up to the reality of the country we live. The people who are supposed to be fighting for us, are not. Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic we saw the gargantuan flaws in our healthcare system that denies people life saving treatment for profit, and the rising wall of income inequality that divides our country. We’ve seen white cops murdering black citizens in broad daylight and on video just because they could. And we've seen the systematic racism present in our justice system that not only fails to hold violent police accountable but does nothing to prevent the same tragedy from repeating over and over again in endless variations.
I'm running because we deserve better. YOU deserve better. We are the backbone of this country. We are the engine that keeps it going. We deserve a country that cares for everyone. A country where every person has the right to quality healthcare, a safe place to live, and a green job. It’s time to elect a leader who doesn't negotiate from the mediocre middle to the bottom of the barrel. It's time to elect a leader that will listen to you and fight for you. I am making a solemn vow, an unbreakable promise to listen to every person and fight for their best interest.
